Plan meals, not just cans
Write a simple three-day outline for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. Choose foods your household already tolerates and understands how to prepare. Existing pantry items count when their dates and condition are appropriate.
Consider allergies, texture needs, infant or older-adult needs, cultural preferences, and any medically directed diet with an appropriate professional.
- 1List nine simple meals plus snacks.
- 2Choose shelf-stable foods requiring little water and fuel.
- 3Add a manual can opener when needed.
- 4Include clean utensils and a basic cleanup plan.
- 5Date the inventory and rotate foods into normal meals.
Plan around outages
Do not assume a refrigerator, microwave, or electric stove will work. Keep food preparation safe and follow current food-safety guidance after an outage or flood.
